Why does pleasure make us healthy?
Pleasure makes us healthier because it changes the chemistry in our body. When one of our senses are exposed to the sensation of pleasure our brain releases four chemicals and they are the feel good chemicals: endorphin, oxytocin, serotonin and dopamine. Now the feel good hormones are strong and happy, in fact they are so strong that they can overpower cortisol the stress hormone.
There is even more good news. Our blood flow increases we look better, we feel happier, have more confidence. Dopamine is the reward hormone so when we don’t have these feel good moments sometimes we create addictive behavior.
What happens if we don’t notice and create this joy?
Create pleasure or create stress it is that simple. First our immune system decreases. Nitric Oxide the hormone that comes when we laugh drops as soon as we feel stressed out and then things like anger, sadness, irritation, and memory loss increase. At the same time blood pressure, climbs along with weight gain, heart disease and strokes.
How do we find this all important element of health?
I have good news for you!
Pleasure is simple and free. Look around and see beauty. I like to be outside but even looking at a picture of something beautiful works. Laugh because that increases Nitric Oxide. Pet an animal or feel something soft against your skin. Taste a piece of dark chocolate. Smell something delicious or listen to your favorite music.
